Windows 11 in 2024: Is the AI-Powered Future Actually Making Your PC Faster?


I remember when Windows 11 first landed. The reaction was mostly a collective shrug, followed by mild annoyance about the taskbar changes. But 2024 has been different. Microsoft decided to go all-in on this AI-first identity, turning the OS into a host for Copilot. If you have been sitting at your desk waiting for your system to magically become a supercomputer, you might have felt a bit underwhelmed. I did, at least initially.
Is it actually faster? That is the billion-dollar question. If you look at the raw benchmarks, the answer is messy. It depends on whether you mean 'boot times' or 'how much of your RAM is being eaten by background processes.' Let us pull the hood back on this.
First, we have to address the elephant in the room. Copilot isn't just a widget you pin to the side. It is woven into the fabric of the shell. On older hardware say, a laptop from three or four years ago you can feel it. There is a slight hesitation when you open the Start menu sometimes. It is not always there, but it is persistent enough to notice if you are someone who actually uses their computer for work.
Microsoft says these processes are optimized. They claim that the AI features are suspended when not in use. But memory usage is up. If you only have 8GB of RAM, Windows 11 in late 2024 feels like a hungry beast. You start Chrome, a few Slack tabs, and suddenly your system is paging to the disk. That is not performance; that is a tax.
Then there is the NPU situation. Intel and AMD are selling 'AI PCs' now. They have dedicated neural processing units that are supposed to offload the heavy lifting. If you own one of these newer chips, the story changes completely. The AI isn't dragging you down; it is doing the busy work like background blurring in video calls or noise cancellation without spiking your CPU usage.
But for the rest of us? The ones with a perfectly good Ryzen 5 or Core i5 from 2021? We are running this AI stuff on the CPU and GPU. That creates heat. Heat causes throttling. Throttling makes things slow. It is a simple chain reaction that marketing teams never like to mention in their glossy product pages.
This is where the argument gets tricky. Even if your PC feels a split-second slower because of the overhead, does the AI actually make you faster? I spent a week trying to force myself to use Copilot for everything. Writing emails, drafting summaries, even just searching for settings I knew were buried deep in the control panel.
The truth is, it depends on the task. For summarizing long documents, it is a massive win. I saved maybe twenty minutes a day just by letting the AI scrape through meeting transcripts. That is real time. If I am effectively faster because I am finishing tasks early, does it matter if my window opening animation is a few milliseconds laggy? Maybe not.
Windows Search has been a punchline for years. It was slow, clunky, and loved to show you Bing ads when you were trying to open Calculator. With the latest updates, it feels marginally smarter. It understands intent better. However, it is still bogged down by web results. Sometimes, I just want to find a file on my desktop, and I don't need the AI to offer me a web search for 'how to find files on Windows' at the same time.
If you are on a laptop, you have likely noticed a hit to your battery. AI features, by nature, require compute. Even if they are efficient, they are running in the background. My daily driver used to get me through a flight to Chicago with juice to spare. Now? I’m looking for a power outlet before the descent. It is not a massive change, but it is noticeable. If you commute and rely on your battery, this is a regression, not an improvement.
Some people are disabling it. You can tweak the registry, you can strip out some of the bloat, and you can make the OS feel like a lean machine again. But that is not for everyone. Most people just want their computer to work. They shouldn't have to become power users just to stop their Start menu from stuttering.
If you are feeling the drag, check your startup apps. Check your background processes. Microsoft loves to hide AI-driven 'suggestions' and 'insights' everywhere in the taskbar, in the settings app, in the file explorer. Turning those off can give you back a decent chunk of performance. You don't need AI to tell you which app you open most often. You already know.
Windows 11 in 2024 is an OS in transition. It is caught between being a reliable desktop environment and being an AI delivery vehicle. For power users with high-end machines, the integration is fine, mostly because the hardware can absorb the cost. For everyone else, it is a mixed bag.
The AI isn't making your hardware faster. If anything, it is using up the headroom that usually makes your computer feel snappy. But it is making you, the user, theoretically more capable. Whether that trade-off is worth it is entirely up to your personal workflow.
My advice? Don't upgrade just for the AI features if you are happy with how your machine runs right now. If you are already on 11, try trimming the fat. Disable the stuff you don't use. Your PC might not have a brain, but it does have limits. Respect them.
